Recording

I specialise in recording classical, neo-classical, acoustic, folk and jazz, on location or in my studio in Bloomsbury, central London. I’m particularly inspired by the acoustics of different spaces , which is what led me to the discipline of classical recording - this emphasises the honest, natural reproduction of performances using the space as an integral part of the recording. I carry much of this sensibility through to my work with singer-songwriters, folk and jazz musicians, although I’m very open minded, relish experimentation and love working in any genre of music.

Equipment:

I use high end, industry standard equipment, including microphones from DPA, Beyerdynamic, Royer, Neumann and Rode and preamps and recording equipment from DAV and RME, among others. However, while equipment is important, I believe it is experience and knowledge of how to tackle different scenarios that really counts.

Streaming

I provide a full live-streaming service, bringing the high quality of sound and video I offer to live online events. This can involve up to 4 cameras (or more on request), and full live switching/editing/mixing for all cameras and sound to go out live to Youtube, Facebook, Zoom, Vimeo or your streaming platform of choice. For simple streaming events I can do all this as a one-person crew, with a single day-rate. For more ambitious projects, a two or three-person crew can be arranged to offer even higher production values, for example with more moving (as opposed to static) cameras.

Live streams are recorded for online replay and can also be edited afterwards at full quality (not limited by internet bandwidth) for additional use.

Equipment:

I use industry-standard streaming equipment and software by Blackmagic Design and OBS.

Filming

I have over 25 years of experience as a film-maker - shooting, editing and directing films for international clients in both corporate and cultural worlds, as well as producing more personal projects including documentaries and art films.

It was only a matter of time before my parallel careers as a film-maker and musician/producer merged and I now concentrate on making films for musicians, with high quality sound and picture as the absolute priority.

I can carry out shoots with up to 4 cameras and high quality sound, by myself. Together with my sound recording skillset, I can effectively work as a one-person crew providing very high quality sound and video at a single day-rate. For more ambitious projects, I have some experienced colleagues who I trust to provide quality additional camera-work.

I’m available for everything from single camera showreel films for musicians to large-scale orchestral projects for organisations.

Equipment:

I use the latest Sony full-frame, 4K cameras and lenses, as well as LED (cool) lighting, DJI gimbals, and an edit and colour-grading suite running DaVinci Resolve software.

Mixing, Mastering & Restoration

I mix and master projects in my studio in Bloomsbury, central London. Mastering is often seen as a mysterious ‘dark art’, but in its essence it simply involves preparing final mixed recordings to be ready for distribution - whether that’s streaming or download, pressing onto vinyl, or duplication on CD. It is however also the final chance to tweak the overall sonic signature of a recording and fix any potential issues before it goes out into the world.

It’s critical that the system and room that the mastering is carried out in is as neutral and honest as possible, in order to avoid ‘fixing’ problems that aren’t really there. My studio is extensively treated, acoustically measured and set up to reveal an accurate portrayal of each recording.

Equipment:

I use full-range monitoring by PMC, additional reference monitoring from Genelec and headphones by Shure, Beyerdynamic and Ollo. I use the very best mastering-grade plugins, which have been carefully chosen and tested to give subtle but effective results without tainting the recording. I also use industry standard software to clean up recordings, for example by removing unwanted noises. My room and equipment have all been developed to work together to provide a mastering environment that I can trust.
